Windows XP is still the best for a Windows based system. Microsoft had intended to stop support on it this December past. However, since Vista has not had the market penetration that was desired Microsoft were forced to continue to support XP. Now with the release of Windows 7 they are again threatening to drop support for XP. The reason that Vista has not had wide acceptance is that it is quirky and is button happy. What I mean is that if you want to delete a short cut off the desktop, I have had to click on 5 dialog boxes to do so. Also, with making connections on the network the Users and User Groups need to be set up correctly. Another thing is that the software that your shop uses may need upgrading and you should investigate what the requirements are for both hardware and software.
I was using XP and had a system to crash. I changed to Vista Home Premium and the same thing happened. I was wondering if I should be using "Windows Server" or "Windows Small Business Server'? If not, I'm not sure what keeps causing the systems to crash.
System Crashes typically occur due to the computer itself having malware on it. In my experience most people take typical installation options when they install programs. The problem with using the typical is you get unwanted software on your computers such as spyware and other malware.
Another cause for crashes is not keeping your computer up to date with updated device drivers and windows updates. Most people have their computers setup to obtain "automatic updates" but what they don't realize is automatic updates ONLY update security vulnerabilities, or what Microsoft considers to be "Critical" updates.
Automatic updates DO NOT update everything. As a matter of fact, many updates to device drivers or other components, even Microsoft Office are NOT updated unless it is to fix a security risk. You have to go to the windows update or microsoft update website and select "custom" instead of "express" to update the non-critical files on your machine.
The third thing that can cause crashes is hardware. Hardware can go bad. Memory addresses in a memory chip may have gone bad on you, and if a program needs to use a portion of the memory card that has gone bad, this will cause a lockup and/or blue screen. If you have recently replaced your memory, and did not purchase the correct type of memory expected by your motherboard then you may experiience where your computer will run for a short period of time and then lock up.
Really there are many many causes to a computer locking up. The list really could go on. But these are a few things to look into.
