Default Specify order products show in categories

Products are listed in categories in alphabetical order. Therefore, as is stated in another thread, one can manipulate the order by they are listed by adding spaces before the product description. That's a little cumbersome, as you have to resort to multiple spaces to order several products, but it does work.

However, that means they will be listed basically the same way in every category they are in. Suppose you want to list product 1 at the top of 1 category but near the bottom of another. It gets to be next to impossible to keep track of how many spaces you need to put where.

I'd like to ask that a way be devised so the user can directly control the order in which products are listed in each category.

Can you please provide a practical example of why you would want to expend days and days of time reordering products multiple categories?

Well, product placement within the categories is probably more of a personal preference, so I'm not sure any one example would make sense to anyone but the person who wants to re-order things.

I think your question answers itself to a certain extent though. As it currently is, it would take days and days of time to reorder things. If there were a simpler way to do it other than tracking how many spaces you've put before the description, it might be much more appealing to re-order them. It's probably more of a simplicity thing than it is a question of added function.

Again, I understand I'm speaking from a purely user side of things and that the cost / benefit when analyzing the programming time to be able to simplify something that is already technically possible is another question altogether.

Actually, in thinking about this a little more, I've been trying to put myself in a customer's shoes and trying to picture what it is they would want to see when I'm arranging my products.

To that point, most e-commerce sites now let the user specify, via a drop down menu, how they want the products on a particular page arranged. Common choices are "Price, high to low", "Price, low to high", "alphabetical, ascending", "alphabetical, descending", etc.

What are the chances of getting something like that? That would make how the store owner arranges them a moot point and would instead let the customer see them in the manner that makes the most sense to them...which is really the goal anyway.

Re-Ordering would be as simple as putting in the product number in the search field. It will pull the product directly up.

    Excellent enhancement suggestion.

That would let me see a specific product (or a customer who knows my part numbers), but I'm not sure how that would place the products in a different order? I guess technically it does, but only by elminating the other products, not by re-ordering them.

Ooops - it just occurred to me - maybe you and I are working off of a different definition of "re-order"? The "re-ordering" I'm talking about is me placing the items in a different order in each category (rather than alphabetical by description), not "re-order" as in a customer buying the same product twice!

    Sorry for the confusion!
